Earwigs are actually called earwigs because of a myth that they crawl into people's ears while they sleep. This myth likely originated from the insect's appearance, with its pincers resembling the shape of an ear. However, there is no scientific evidence to support the idea that earwigs are attracted to human ears or crawl into them. In reality, earwigs are simply nocturnal insects that seek out dark, damp places to hide during the day. **

To control earwigs, you can start by removing their hiding places such as mulch, leaves, and debris around the garden. You can also use traps, such as rolled-up newspapers or cardboard tubes filled with straw, to attract and capture earwigs. Additionally, applying diatomaceous earth or insecticidal soaps around the garden can help to control earwig populations. Regularly inspecting and cleaning the garden can also help to prevent earwigs from becoming a problem. **

Yes, earwigs can damage plants by feeding on leaves, flowers, and fruits. They are particularly attracted to tender new growth and can cause significant damage to seedlings and young plants. Earwigs are also known to feed on the silk of developing corn ears, leading to reduced yields. However, they can also be beneficial in some cases by feeding on other pests such as aphids and mites. **

Earwigs are generally considered to be harmless to humans. While they have intimidating pincers on their abdomen, they are not aggressive and rarely use them for defense. Earwigs are primarily scavengers, feeding on decaying plant material and insects, and do not pose a threat to humans. However, they can sometimes be a nuisance if they enter homes in search of food or shelter. **
